Grace Cook Passes Away
Who is (was) Grace Cook, you ask? Well, if you’re a true P-Funkateer, you know the answer. If not, read on. Grace Cook was the mother of Funkadelic rhythm guitarist Eddie Hazel. If you paid attention to the songwriting credits on various Funkadelic albums, you will note that the name Grace Cook was listed as a co-writer on many classic Funkadelic songs. That’s because Eddie Hazel wanted to give back to his mom so he would have her name listed as the songwriter instead of his own name so the royalties would go to her. Eddie Hazel, of course, was the legendary guitarist in the band who gave us the 1971 classic Maggot Brain. He passed away in 1992. As such, when Parliament-Funkadelic was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, it was his mother Grace Cook who came on stage with George Clinton and Bootsy Collins to accept on her son Eddie’s behalf. It was also Ms. Cook who showed a chuckle when Bootsy took his turn at the mic with his trademark “yaaaaa-ba-da-ba doozie, mama!”
