Teddy Pendergrass Dead At 59
I just got this very sad news from a friend of mine that the original “Teddy Bear” Teddy Pendergrass, passed away at age 59 yesterday. Damn.
The man who began as a drummer for Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes before becoming their well known lead vocalist with such classics as If You Don’t Know Me By Now, Bad Luck, and Wake Up Everybody. The man who went on to woo the women with such classics as Close The Door, When Somebody Loves You Back, Only You, and Love TKO (not necessarily a wooing song but a quiet storm classic nonetheless). The man who did the (in)famous For Women Only concerts back in the day, habitually having women’s panties thrown up on stage for him. And, of course, the man who had all of that interrupted by a terrible car accident in the beginning of the eighties which left him paraplegic but he still persevered. Rest in peace, T.P.
