VH1 Rock Docs Does Right By Cornelius And Soul Train
I watched the documentary last night for Soul Train on VH1 and I loved it! VH1 definitely did the classic show justice. The documentary covered Don Cornelius’s humble beginnings as a child, his early career as a journalist and his involvement with the Civil Rights movement, working with Jesse Jackson (afro and all) and his coverage of Martin Luther King Jr., and his sense of unrest at the lack of Black programming on TV. It covered his landmark deal as owner for his new creation, Soul Train, as a local show in his hometown of Chicago. The show’s move to Los Angeles and how it blew up as a major force for Black music and Black pride in general. Cornelius’ friendships with the O’Jays, the Staple Singers, and Curtis Mayfield and how they supported him in the early days of the show both in Chicago and L.A.. The Soul Train Dancers and how they helped make the show the hit that it became. The dancers who would go on to fame outside of Soul Train including Rosie Perez, Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel as part of Shalamar, and Fred “Rerun” Berry. The theme songs for the show and the dance styles. How the show weathered the changes in music styles for Black music throughout the years from soul, funk, and jazz to disco to rap and hip hop. How the show weathered the change in hosts when Cornelius decided to step down in 1993. If you missed it, it comes on again Wednesday. Check the schedule for Rock Docs: Soul Train on VH1.
