Arson On Gamble and Huff Offices? Sacrilege! [Post a Comment]
The home of Gamble and Huff Do these young people not know their history? Arson on the Philadelphia International Records offices! Unbelievable.

It was ruled arson and the arsonist was caught yesterday — a 25-y.o. punk who broke into the building and deliberately set the offices on fire. I repeat my opening question: do these young people not know their history?

I mean, come on now — anyone of age in Philly know of the musical contributions of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff. They were to Philadelphia what Berry Gordy was to Detroit with Motown. I mean, Gamble and Huff (and Thom Bell and the late Linda Creed, for that matter, as well as the late McFadden and Whitehead) gave us so many classic hits throughout the late sixties, seventies, and eighties on Philadelphia International.

If you watched the VH1 documentary on Soul Train, you know that Gamble and Huff even supplied the classic theme song, T.S.O.P. (The Sound Of Philadelphia) by M.F.S.B. featuring The Three Degrees.

Let’s not forget all of the many artists who came from the Philadelphia International stable: Intruders, Delfonics, Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, Patti LaBelle, Phyllis Hyman (in her later years), The O’Jays, even The Jacksons after they left Motown (a fact that was woefully underplayed during all of the tributes and retrospectives on the late Michael Jackson’s career but I digress).

And now some young punk comes and torches the offices of that landmark building. Sad, very sad.

Well, to borrow from President OBama’s classic book title, Gamble and Huff themselves were very gracious in their audacity of hope when they say the fire won’t stop them.

Don’t be surprised if you hear me play McFadden and Whitehead’s classic — you know the one — here on the site as part of the next playlist this weekend.
