The Latest From Erykah Badu, Plus Controversy Already
Erykah Badu’s latest CD, New Amerykah Part Two: Return Of The Ankh, is out now and is a nice, mellow sequel to her previous entry Part One: 4th World War. Check out my review of the CD on the main site. In the meantime, it would seem that Ms. Badu has already garnered some controversy with her latest release.
The current single from the new CD is Window Seat, a nice mellow quiet storm number. Non-threatening to listen to, right? Well, her video for the song is raising eyebrows. It starts off innocently where she parks her car, gets out, and is walking through the streets of Dallas. However, as she’s walking, she gradually takes her clothes off. This culminates in her stripping down all the way to her bikini underwear, revealing a nice looking body. If it stopped there, we probably would not be hearing as much about it other than to comment on her shapely figure. But of course, this being Erykah Badu, it doesn’t stop there. She procees to remove her bikini top and her bikini bottom, stripping completely nude in the video. No body double, no computer trickery (other than to blur out her exposed areas for TV viewing), no body suit. Ms. Badu is 100% naked in the video. Well, it turns out that she is already at risk of running afoul of the law because of her stripping in public on the streets of Dallas in the video with people looking on. Turns out that Dallas police are trying to decide whether they want to charge her for indecent exposure because of her naked stunt in the video. As a misdemeanor, she could be fined up to $4,000 which isn’t terrible for someone with money. It could be worse. As in, she can also face up to a year in jail if the police convict her. Since no police were present when she did it, they can’t do anything to her unless one of the passerby people in the video actually decides to report her to the police as a witness. Hopefully, no one decides to be an ass and cause trouble for her by doing so. That would be kind of petty and mean spirited to do, don’t you think? Or do you think that Badu was wrong for doing the naked stunt in the video?
