The Return Of Lauryn Hill
Alright — by now, I’m sure you have read or heard about former Fugee Lauryn Hill giving her interview with NPR. Let’s talk about Ms. Hill for a minute, shall we?
The Fugees — Wyclef Jean, Pras, and Lauryn Hill — burst onto the hip hop scene in the nineties with such hits as Ooh La La and their remake of the Roberta Flack classic Killing Me Softly (With His Song). Their style was a blend of old school hip hop, neosoul, and reggae. Then the group broke up and everyone went their separate ways. Lauryn Hill hit big right out of the gate with her solo debut, The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill. This yielded such hits as Doo Wop (That Thing) and To Zion. Then, she did her MTV Unplugged set which hit big commercially but garnered mixed reviews from critics due to its very different lyrical direction, where the focus was on the lyrics as opposed to the music. She went into a sort of seclusion afterwards, followed by a brief and ill-fated reunion with The Fugees, followed by more seclusion. She had been making appearances but questions about her mental and emotional health and well being arose. Now the lady is back again, apparently once again whole and looking to the future. Now back to the present. Ms. Hill, as she apparently insists on being addressed, addressed her disappearance from the music scene, what she would like to do for future projects, and how the music industry consumes its own. Somehow, the 1972 Funkadelic album and song America Eats Its Young comes to mind on that last sentiment. Apparently, Ms. Hill felt that the machine that is the music industry failed to take care of its own in her case. That it just ate her up and that she did not have the support system that she needed so she stepped away from it all. As for her return, she addressed the fact that she now has five children, the youngest being 2. She feels she can now once again test the waters and embark on her “comeback”. As for new music, she expressed a desire to do more actual singing as opposed to hip hop style singing. Seems that she wants to stretch vocally and musically, much like Queen Latifah decided to stretch and do singing instead of rapping for a while there, surprising everyone with her jazz vocal stylings. Now if I had been the one interviewing Ms. Hill, I would have loved to get her take on the changes in the music industry since the mid-nineties and how she feels she can fit in with today’s crop of singers (and, in some cases, I use that term loosely). However, people love Lauryn Hill so she probably won’t have too much trouble making a comeback on the airwaves. Only time will tell, I guess.
