Motown Writer and Moonglows Founder Harvey Fuqua Has Died
Harvey Fuqua, an important part of the history of Motown Records and the founder of doowop group The Moonglows, has passed away today. Fuqua was the husband of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s sister Gwen Gordy and they ran a label called Anna Records, named after another Gordy sibling. Their label was instrumental in distributing Motown’s very first hit single by Barrett Strong, a singer and songwriter who would work with songwriter Norman Whitfield. When they sold their label to Berry Gordy, Fuqua became one of Motown’s writers and an executive at the label. His doowop group, The Moonglows, would be instrumental in introducing the world to soul legend Marvin Gaye. Fuqua would later be instrumental in introducing the disco world to the late Sylvester and Two Tons O’ Fun, later known as The Weather Girls (of It’s Raining Men fame). He later worked again with Marvin Gaye on his seminal Midnight Love album (which featured a little tune called Sexual Healing). Harvey Fuqua was 80 — he would have turned 81 later on this month.
