MTV Looks To Become Music Television Again: A Novel Concept
MTV is not something I typically talk about here at T-Mad’s Music. However, I thought that this interesting bit of news was worth sharing and talking about. MTV is looking to ease back into the business of showing music videos again by reintroducing one of its classic cult shows: Beavis & Butt-head. It’s funny that I was just recently engaged in a “fun” debate with a youngun concerning MTV and its abandonment of the music video format which its initialism comes from in favor of all of these damn reality shows. I admit to watching MTV during its early years heavily when I was in college. Considering the fact that I went away for college and did not have my own cable-enabled TV in my dorm room, I had little choice when it came to the TV in the dormitory’s main entertainment area. Trust me, the likes of Money For Nothing and Walk Of Life by Dire Straits and Never and These Dreams by Heart were constants during my freshman year of college. During the eighties and early to mid nineties I watched all the music cable stations: MTV, VH1, and BET (back when the latter was still worth watching on a regular basis but I digress). I watched Yo! MTV Raps with Ed Lover, Doctor Dre (not the NWA Dr. Dre), and Fab Five Freddy. I watched Pop Up Videos. I watched the cult animated classics like Aeon Flux, Ren and Stimpy (“happy, happy, joy, joy”), and the aforementioned Beavis and Butt-head. Beavis & Butt-head were to music videos what Mystery Science Theater was to B-movies. So now MTV has decided to bring back that perennial classic as a way of sneaking back into the music video showing business. What do you think about this latest turn of events for MTV? Do you think that the reality show craze is FINALLY beginning to run its course and MTV is trying to go back to basics while they can?
