Celebrities Becoming Politicians:Wyclef For President… [Post a Comment]
…of Haiti, that is. As you know by now, former Fugee Wyclef Jean has thrown in his hat for the presidential election in his native country, Haiti. I just watched a panel on CNN, including actor Sean Penn, discuss the merits of Mr. Jean running for president of the beleaguered nation and some interesting concerns and issues were raised. Of course, Wyclef Jean is not the first celebrity (in this case, musician and producer) to enter the world of politics. However, is it a good thing or a bad thing or a non-issue to have a celebrity become a politician? Let’s look at some other well known celebrity figures who went into politics.

Of course, there was the late Ronald Reagan, actor turned California governor turned president of the United States. Despite criticisms of the “Reaganomics” era during the decade of excess, he made great use of his charisma during his tenure as president.

Let us not forget the surprisingly successful turn of WWE (then known as WWF) wrestler Jesse “The Body” Ventura as governor of Minnesota. Or “The Terminator” Arnold Schwartzenegger in the role of California governor and “Dirty Harry”, Clint Eastwood, as mayor of Carmel, California.

There is former Law & Order actor Fred Thompson as a U.S. Senator, Fred Grandy (“Gopher” from The Love Boat), Ben Jones (“Cooter” from The Dukes Of Hazzard), and the late singer Sonny Bono as respected members of Congress.

Do you think that Wyclef Jean has what it takes to help bring Haiti back to a level of greatness and overturn the blight of corruption and destruction and devastation that have all besieged the nation? Or do you think that, despite his best intentions, the former Fugees member is biting off more than he can chew?
