Ike Turner and “Rocket 88” Honored This Weekend
The late Ike Turner and his 1951 classic “Rocket 88”, generally considered the very first official rock and roll recording, will be honored in his hometown in Mississippi this weekend. Sadly, many people not from Mr. Turner’s generation only know him as the abusive ex-husband of singer Tina Turner. His tarnished legacy overshadows his musical contributions prior to introducing the world to Anna Mae Bullock. His Kings Of Rhythm band, his musicianship, his presaging of the rock-n-roll genre with his 1951 recording. Well, Clarkson, MS seeks to rectify that oversight this weekend with markers honoring the late musician, along with a festival honoring the landmark recording. Clearly, his hometown does not want him to become a footnote in the history of soul and rock-n-roll music. What are your thoughts about it?
