Dammit, ANOTHER Passing: Phelps Catfish Collins Has Died [Post a Comment]
Sigh. Another member of the P-Funk family has passed on. Phelps “Catfish” Collins, older brother of Bootsy Collins and fellow member of The J.B.’s and Parliament-Funkadelic and Bootsy’s Rubber Band, succumbed to cancer today at 66.

You may have seen the episode on TV One’s Unsung which focused on Bootsy Collins’ story. Well, it also included his older brother Catfish. Catfish, who was eight years Bootsy’s senior, got Bootsy into music. Since Catfish played the rhythm guitar, Bootsy played bass guitar. The two of them fronted a Cincinnati crew called The Pacemakers who later became The House Guests. The House Guests ended up becoming James Brown’s band, The J.B.’s, briefly before moving on and then joining Parliament-Funkadelic. They would become the nucleus of the P-Funk spin-off Bootsy’s Rubber Band.

Now Catfish has joined fellow P-Funk alumni Glen Goins, Tyrone Lampkin, Tiki Fulwood, Ray Davis, Richard “Kush” Griffith, Dianne Brooks (she sang with Funkadelic on their 1972 album “America Eats Its Young” — died in 2005), Mallia Franklin, and George Clinton Jr. (son of P-Funk leader) in P-Funk heaven.
