Damn, Another Shocking Passing: Heavy D. Is Dead
As if the passing of boxing legend “Smokin’” Joe Frazier last night at the age of 67 from cancer wasn’t sad enough. Now the music world is rocked by the sudden passing today of old school hip hop legend Heavy D. at the age of 44. I heard the stunning news on the radio during my drive home from work and couldn’t believe it. It’s like when I heard about the passings of Gerald Levert, Sean Levert, and Michael Jackson while driving home from work, or the passing of Teena Marie while driving home from a Christmas family visit. No word yet on what happened but, according to the article, he was rushed to the hospital today and passed away. Damn. As someone who also happens to be 44 myself, the news is particularly disconcerting. Heavy D. was one of the numerous old school rappers that I listened to back in the eighties and nineties before I stopped actively listening to rap music following its numerous changes for the worse. His raps were always fun: The Overweight Lover’s In The House, We Got Our Own Thang, Now That We Found Love, Girls, They Love Me, and so forth. Despite his girth back then, he was a moving brother who jammed when he and his crew, Heavy D. & The Boyz, performed. His trademarl “diddly-d” raps, especially on their classic We Got Our Own Thang, was the ultimate tongue twister. Damn. First, boxer Joe Frazier, now rap legend Heavy D. Now I am getting old.
