Consequences Of Roots Brouhaha On Fallon Show [Post a Comment]
Looks like Questlove’s recent sneaky snarkiness with his song selection on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon has cost him and his band, The Roots, a little bit of creative freedom on the show. Not much, just a little bit.

Last month, when Republican presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann appeared on the show, The Roots played for her intro an old song from the eighties by the Black funk/rock band Fishbone titled Lyin’ Ass Bitch.

It was Questlove’s way of making a political statement against Bachmann and he snuck it in there without either NBC or Jimmy Fallon himself being the wiser. Of course, when Bachmann discovered the song, she was highly offended and demanded an apology from NBC (which she later received).

Now, the consequence of Questlove’s little dig at Bachmann? NBC has decided that The Roots’ song selections have to be cleared by the station ahead of time. Questlove says he understands from a business perspective and that NBC promises not to step on his toes too much, recognizing that the show is a comedic talk show.

Sort of brings to mind the censorship battles that Keenan Ivory Wayans had to fight with Fox back in the day with his show, In Living Color.

When the Fox network first came on the scene, it was new and had not garnered an audience yet so they were more bold in the beginning. Especially with their early flagship show, Married … With Children, which was completely “wild, wild west” with its early episodes. However, once Fox became a hit, then it began to rein things in with its shows, which is why Wayans had to fight so much with them over censorship.

Who can forget their classic Colt 45 skit? The skit that aired was a runaway hit but it was an accident. That broadcast version was actually meant to be left on the cutting room floor because, during constant retakes, the cast actually got drunk drinking the Colt 45 malt liquor so many times (yeah, they actually did drink the real thing on the show). Now, that classic version has become “permanently unavailable” for viewing.

So I guess Questlove can be proud of himself for his clever dig at Bachmann — he has joined the ranks of other censorship battlers.
