Recent Passings In The Soul Music World
I recently blogged about the passing of soul legend J. Blackfoot and, before that, the passing of hip hop legend Heavy D. Well, here is my belated acknowledgement of the passings of singer Dobie Grey and blues guitarist Hubert Sumlin, who played with Howlin’ Wolf. Dobie Grey sang the 1973 mellow groover Drift Away. I never really knew anything about Dobie Grey other than that song. However, he should still be acknowledged. He was 69 and died of cancer. Hubert Sumlin was the guitarist for blues singer Howlin’ Wolf. He was a major musical influence on The Rolling Stones. As such, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have committed to paying for his funeral arrangements.
