TV One Unsung Returns January 2nd With New Lineup
Everyone’s favorite Black music biography show, Unsung, returns January 2nd to bring in the New Year with a new lineup of featured artists. Check out the new lineup: Vesta Williams — The late Vesta Williams, known for such hits as Once Bitten, Twice Shy, Don’t Blow A Good Thing, Congratulations, and Do Ya, will be the inaugural feature for the new year. She had been working on a new album before her untimely death. Bobby Womack — The journeyman of soul music, with such hits as Nobody Wants You When You’re Down And Out, If You Think You’re Lonely Now, and his blaxploitation classic Across 110th Street. Atlantic Starr — The Lewis brothers with various female lead vocalists, most famously Sharon Bryant and Barbara Weathers. Known for such early funk numbers as Kissing Power and Let’s Rock And Roll, they became more known as a quiet storm band with such classics as When Love Calls, Secret Lovers, Silver Shadow, Circles, and If Your Heart Isn’t In It. Freddie Jackson — The eighties balladeer known for such classics as Rock With Me Tonight and Tasty Love and who worked with such artists as Kashif, Whitney Houston, and Melba Moore. Whodini — Continuing their new trend of featuring old school hip hop legends, Unsung checks in with Jalil, Ecstasy, and Grandmaster Dee. The trio was known for such old school classics as Five Minutes Of Funk, Friends, Big Mouth, and their seminal classic The Freaks Come Out At Night. Ray Parker Jr. — Funk guitarist with Miles Davis, who wrote a seminal hit for Rufus & Chaka Khan, who later reinvented himself as a singer songwriter with his band Raydio and as a solo artist. Known for such classics as Jack and Jill, A Woman Needs Love, the P-Funk instrumental classic For Those Of You Who Like To Groove, The Other Woman, and the legally controversial movie title classic Ghostbusters. Sheila E. — Sheila Escovedo, who played in George Duke’s band before finding fame as part of Prince’s musical family, then reinvented herself as a jazz solo artist with her own band. Best known commercially for such classics as The Glamorous Life, Toy Box, A Love Bizarre, and Erotic City (the latter two with Prince). David Ruffin — The late original member of The Temptations, whose troubled life was portrayed on the NBC biopic. In addition to leading The Temptations on such classics as My Girl and Ain’t Too Proud To Beg, he was known for such solo classics as Walk Away From Love. Millie Jackson — The original Queen Of Raunch, long before the likes of rappers L’il Kim and Foxxy Brown, and the queen of the monologue rap. Known for such classics as Hurts So Good (from the blaxploitation movie classic Cleopatra Jones), her extended “rap” rendition of If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don’t Wanna Be Right), I Had To Say It, and Young Man, Older Woman. Full Force — The eighties New York based production sextet known as much for their appearances in the House Party movies as the antagonists to Kid n Play as they were for their songwriting for such artists as Samantha Fox, James Brown, LaToya Jackson, Cheryl “Pepsii” Riley, and their most successful project Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam. Known for such jams as Alice I Want You Just For Me, I Wonder If I Take You Home, Unselfish Lover, Unfaithful, and Ain’t My Type Of Hype. Wow! Now that’s what I call a solid lineup of artists.
