Spotify Has Copped A Broadcast From T-Mad’s Music
This came as quite a surprise to me today as I was listening to music on the streaming service Spotify, while I still can do so for free before it adopts a paid subscription model. I actually enjoy using Spotify. However, I never thought I would encounter one of my own broadcasts on Spotify. I certainly never expected to find it on there without my knowledge or my permission! I work from home on Fridays so I was listening to music on my PC while working. Nothing unusual there. Again, I was listening to music from Spotify and, again, nothing unusual there. Now here comes the kicker. In listening to some of my favorites, I decided on a whim to listen to the late Rick James. While listening to a Rick James song, I scrolled down to see how many of his albums were available to choose from on Spotify. Of course, as expected, his 1981 classic album Street Songs is on there, which includes his classic duet with the late Teena Marie, Fire and Desire. Now, as all quiet storm music lovers know, Fire and Desire is a seven-minute song, right? (7:07, to be exact) Imagine my surprise to see the song on Spotify under that album with the playing time listed as 80:43. EIGHTY MINUTES FORTY THREE SECONDS??? I figured, okay, someone made an extreme typo or someone messed up with the generation of the song file for that selection and the file is corrupted. Curiosity got the better of me and I listened to it. It started off fine so I advanced the time to see what came afterwards. As I continued to do so, the mix of songs sounded extremely familiar to me. For good reason — Spotify appropriated my broadcast from January of last year, a tribute to the late Teena Marie (who had passed away during the Christmas holiday in 2010), IN ITS ENTIRETY and has it on their site under the song title Fire and Desire from the Street Songs album. Yes, you have read correctly. Spotify (mis)appropriated my original broadcast from January 3rd, 2011, from right here at T-Mad’s Music without my knowledge or my permission and has it on their site without giving any proper credit to T-Mad’s Music whatsoever (refer to screen capture below).
You can verify this for yourself if you have Spotify by pulling up Rick James, scrolling down to the album Street Songs, and noting the playing time for Fire and Desire and then playing it. It is the full, unedited, original broadcast with my voice on it between songs and everything. Again, I like Spotify. I would have been flattered for the usage of my broadcast had proper credit been given. However, while I obviously do not claim the music as my own, I damn well do claim the broadcast itself as my own! I created that playlist myself, selecting songs that no one else would have thought to select for a Teena Marie tribute. The funk band Ozone — do any of the radio stations or clable stations even know who they are? Bernadette Cooper from Klymaxx — do any of the radio stations or cable stations play anything from her 1990 solo album, let alone know that Teena Marie was on it? Do any radio stations or cable stations play anything from, or even know about, her rare and long out of print independent release Passion Play? Shame on you, Spotify. I hope you respond to my contact form and rectify the situation with T-Mad’s Music. If you see fit to remove it altogether, that’s fine with me — no skin off my bones. However, if you choose to keep it on your site, then I would very much appreciate receiving proper credit for my unedited broadcast.
