Belated Post: Bobby Womack On Unsung
Just now getting around to blogging about this week’s installment of TV One’s Unsung: Bobby Womack. It was a great segment. I did not know about his work with The Rolling Stones — that was definitely a surprise to learn about. I also did not know about all of Bobby Womack’s travails: his professional ostracizement because he married Sam Cooke’s widow after his death, his one brother’s murder, the death of a child due to his drug-use-related negligence, his drug use itself. Definitely a lot on his plate. And through it all, he persevered as a soul singer. A true journeyman in soul music and, as was said by someone on the show, one of the last few remaining real soul singers from an era gone by. The guy still brings up raw soul from his gut when he sings. People like him and Bill Withers are a rare breed. Next week: Atlantic Starr.
