Atlantic Starr On Unsung [Post a Comment]
I got to watch Unsung last night with their feature on Atlantic Starr and it was an interesting story.

I knew that Atlantic Starr revolved around the Lewis brothers — Wayne, David, and Jonathan. I knew that the two main female vocalists in the band were Sharon Bryant and Barbara Weathers and that, afterwards, they began shuffling through various female leads before putting the focus on the brothers. However, I never knew the real story behind the change-ups before.

Sounds like, once the band began to hit with Sharon Bryant out front and the Lewis brothers as the principal songwriters, that undermined the bond among the band members and jealousy reared its ugly head. It’s a shame that was the case because who knows how long the original nonet could have ridden the gravy train of success.

Sharon Bryant will always go down as the soulful, funky original vocalist with such hits as When Love Calls, Circles, and Touch A Four Leaf Clover. Then came in her younger, fairer, softer sounding replacement, Barbara Weathers.

Barbara’s introduction into the group brought a softer sound with such quiet storm classics as Secret Lovers, Silver Shadow, and Always, as well as the funky Freak-A-Ristic. Unfortunately, once again, jealousy reared its ugly head as David Lewis took umbrage towards the young Weathers getting the attention as the new lead vocalist and took it out on the poor girl by berating her on a regular basis. Of course, money also came into play, leading to her departure from the band.

The Lewises then decided to downplay the role of the female vocalist in the band and put the focus on themselves, which changed the dynamic of the band’s music. And, of course, when that happens, the only place a band can go is downhill from there.

However, the Lewis brothers have reconvened Atlantic Star with yet another new female vocalist and Davis has found love and God, enabling him to apologize to, and make peace with, Barbara Weathers.

The show only briefly touched upon the solo careers of Sharon Bryant and Barbara Weathers at the very end. Otherwise, as usual, it was very informative.

Next week, Freddie Jackson.
