Soul and Blues Legend Etta James Has Passed Away
While this news may not be very surprising, it is still sad nonetheless — Etta James, whose one mainstream-acknowledged classic At Last was famously covered by Beyoncé in the movie Cadillac Records, has passed away at age 73. The reason the news was not a surprise is because her doctors had been saying for a while now, since she checked into a hospital, that she was not much longer for this world. She had Alzheimer’s Disease, pneumonia, and leukemia. Sadly, it was the leukemia that took her away. While the mainstream seems to only know her for the one song, At Last, Etta James (a reversal of her real first name, Jamesetta) had a very lenghty career as a blues singer. She did everything from blues to soul to funk and everything in between as one of the stars on the Chess record label. The ever-ubiquitous former Destiny’s Child singer Beyoncé Knowles portrayed Etta James in the movie Cadillac Records and sang her signature song. She even sang the song for President Obama at his inauguration, while Etta James herself sang it at one of the then-newly elected President’s balls. This has been a bad week for soul and funk musicians passing away. First, Jimmy Castor. Then bassist Henry Davis from L.T.D.. Now Etta James. Sigh.
