R&B singer R. Kelly, Mr. Bump N Grind, has
put out an autobiography titled
Soulacoaster: Diary Of Me, co-written with famed music biographer David Ritz. Apparently, it is not as all-telling as one would expect from someone like R. Kelly. Hmmm … which parts got covered and which parts were left uncovered …
So the book apparently steers clear of his supposed inappropriate marriage to a teenaged Aaliyah, his sex tape scandal and, for the most part, his child pornography scandal (it has to be stated that he was acquitted of those charges). Otherwise, the book is supposedly very telling.
Actually, from reading the article about it, I was surprised to learn that he was — and still
is — illiterate.
That was an unexpected bit of news about him.
The book apparently covers the dichotomy in his music in terms of sexual and spiritual. As one who remembers when he first came onto the music scene in the early nineties with Public Announcement during the New Jack Swing era with such songs as
She’s Got That Vibe and the remake of the Stevie Wonder classic
Hey Love with Mr. Lee, then followed his career with the
12 Play album and such salacious hits as
Bump N Grind, I was most surprised when he came out with what has become a gospel classic,
I Believe I Can Fly.
Bump N Grind and
I Believe I Can Fly in the same sentence? Talk about an oxymoron! But then, the same can be said of artists like Prince during his heyday — nuff said.
Kelly’s recent soul album reminded people of just how talented a singer he truly is and the potential he has as a true soul artist. It will be interesting to see what kind of reception this autobiography will get.
