The Houstons Remember Whitney On Lifetime: My Thoughts [Post a Comment]
Last night, and I had only found out about this yesterday from my fianceé, Lifetime aired an hour-long special called The Houstons Remember Whitney. I checked it out and had mixed thoughts about it.
The special featured all of the Houstons — mother Cissy, daughter Bobbi Kristina a/k/a Krissy, brother Gary, sister-in-law Pat, and niece Rayah along with family friend Nick Gordon and Pat’s brother. The show was basically meant to be the family members sharing their memories and anecdotes about Whitney the woman.
At first, though, it seemed to be more of a self-glorifying affair as Gary’s and Cissy’s tales seemed to be just as much, if not more so, about themselves as about Whitney. Yes, we know that Cissy was a gospel recording artist and a member of The Sweet Inspirations. However, it seemed that much of her early anecdotes in the show focused on herself as much as on her daughter. Same with brother Gary, himself a gospel singer of lesser known repute. That part was beginning to put me off a bit.
However, it turned around when Patricia came in. It turns out that she really was in Whitney’s corner and put more of the focus back on Whitney in her anecdotal reminiscences. The same with Bobbi Kristina, Rayah, and Nick who all shared genuine memories with Whitney and showed, to me, genuine emotion when talking about her.
Gary and Cissy later showed the emotion that you would expect of someone who lost their sister and daughter, respectively. However, finding out that this special is in reality (pun intended) nothing more than a prelude to the upcoming Lifetime reality show The Houstons: On Our Own (which debuts next Wednesday) sort of takes a little bit away from the genuineness to me.
But then again, if you haven’t gotten it by now about me, I AM SICK OF ALL OF THESE DAMN REALITY SHOWS.
George Clinton had it right in 1977 with the Parliament song Funkentelechy and again in 1978 with the Funkadelic song Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers). It really is all about commercialism and the pimping of the pleasure principle as we truly do live in a state of mental diarrhea talking shit a mile a minute in our society today.
What do celebrities do to promote a new product? Use a reality show.
What do celebrity couples do to promote or highlight their relationship? Use a reality show.
What do the families of famous celebrities who have recently passed away do in the wake of their passing? Use a damn reality show.
Say it with me as you read this: THAT’S IT, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! I HAVE HAD IT UP TO HERE WITH ALL OF THESE MOTHERFUCKING REALITY SHOWS ON THE MOTHERFUCKING TV!
Had to get my Samuel L. Jackson vibe on there — if you saw Snakes On The Plane, you’ll get the reference.
